1) It was much larger than today’s brown bear. The cave bear could grow very large, with the biggest males weighing several hundred kilograms. Today’s brown bear usually weighs between 150 and 350 kilograms, although size and weight vary by region and sex. 2. It became extinct around 24,000 years ago. Scientists believe that climate change, the loss of suitable habitats, and food shortages contributed to its extinction. 3. It was not mainly a hunter. Although it may have looked intimidating, the cave bear mostly ate plants, fruits, and roots. Its teeth and studies of its remains indicate that its diet was predominantly plant-based. 4. Some people mistake it for a dinosaur. Because of its large skeleton and distinctive shape, some visitors mistake it for a dinosaur. That is why our museum launched the THIS IS NOT … campaign, which raises awareness about the difference between a bear and a dinosaur. The museum shop and online store of Notranjski Museum Postojna have been enriched with a distinctive new locally made product. From now on, visitors can purchase unique ceramic mugs created by academic artist Rebeka Petrovčič, who works under the name Reluna Studio. Her mugs are distinguished by expressive illustrations of eyes, reflecting her characteristic artistic fascination with drawing and painting the human gaze – a recurring motif throughout her work. Each mug is therefore much more than an everyday object; it is a small work of art that brings a unique character to every cup of coffee or tea. The collection is available in two sizes: a smaller mug, ideal for coffee, and a larger version, perfect for tea or other hot beverages. During the summer period (July–August), the Notranjska Museum Postojna will be open every day from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The museum will be closed on Mondays. For families visiting the museum, we recommend exploring the model of the giant olm, taking part in the KRASquiz, enjoying the Jamar Junior play area, and viewing cave animals under a digital microscope. For foreign visitors Audio guides in German and Italian are available free of charge. For visitors with a more adventurous spirit we recommend the Krasolov experience game, which is available in Slovenian, English, and Italian. Dear Visitors, We are pleased to inform you that, from June onwards, the Notranjska Museum Postojna will be extending its opening hours. The museum will be open from Tuesday to Sunday, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. On Sunday, 7 June 2026, free admission to the museum will be offered to all residents of Postojna, Pivka, Cerknica and the Loška Dolina area. Visitors may enjoy the permanent exhibition The Karst Museum, including new additions in the basement, the outdoor depot area and lapidarium, the temporary exhibition Crime and Fruit, which explores the phenomenon of graffiti, as well as the children’s corner Jamar Junior. Foreign visitors may make free use of audio guides available in Slovenian, Italian and English. For those seeking adventure, we recommend taking part in the KARSTHUNT experience.
