Visiting Postojna Cave? Don’t stop there!
Discover 5 extraordinary reasons to visit the Notranjska Museum Postojna.
1.) 20 cave animals under a digital microscope
You’ve probably seen the famous olm (Proteus anguinus) in the Postojna cave aquarium. But did you know there are dozens of other fascinating cave creatures? At the museum, you can explore 20 of them up close under a digital microscope — animals most visitors have never even heard of!
2.) A stalagmite you are actually allowed to touch
Every responsible cave visitor knows: never touch cave formations — the oils from our skin can stop them from growing. That’s why we have a real stalagmite on display that you are encouraged to touch! It has been cut open so you can see inside and admire its beautiful colours up close, in complete peace.
3.) The Predjama Treasure
Discovered in Predjama Castle in the 1990s, the Predjama Treasure is the most valuable castle find ever discovered in Slovenia and a truly unique piece of the country’s heritage. Whether or not you have visited Predjama Castle, you can see this national treasure right here at the museum — a must-see for every visitor to Postojna!
4.) Real cave rubbish — and a mine
Pollution is one of the world’s most pressing problems. Our exhibition shows actual waste recovered from a cave, collected during a clean-up carried out to raise awareness about protecting the incredibly fragile karst underground ecosystem. Among the rubbish, you can even see a mine that had to be deactivated on site.
5.) The first cave locomotive
Meet Montania, the first petrol-powered locomotive used in Postojna cave. It began carrying visitors through the cave after the First World War, opening a new chapter in the history of cave tourism. Today, this historic locomotive is on display at the museum — a fascinating reminder of how exploring the underground has changed over time.
Postojna Cave shows you the underground. The Notranjska Museum helps you understand it. Come and discover the stories beneath the surface.
