PLANINA HISTORICAL PATH
In collaboration with the Historical Society of Rapallo Border, the Notranjska Museum has established a thematic trail in Planina - a place of the most significant and frequently visited border crossing of the Rapallo border after World War I and in the territory of present-day Slovenia.
The historical path in Planina connects various locations in Planinsko Polje (Planina Karst Field) and Planina, where the remains of the former state border between the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and the Kingdom of Italy in the interim between the two world wars can still be seen. During the interwar period, Planina was a place of bold smuggling stories, blood feuds, riots caused by Italian soldiers, clashes between border authorities, international disputes, fascist violence, and even a visit by Mussolini. Just three years before the renewed Italian occupation of Yugoslavia and the bloody war, Mussolini spoke about friendship between the two countries in this very place.
The landmarks of the former border are now silent witnesses of an era that left many scars on Planina - abandoned hamlets, the ruins of a mighty castle, and memories of a time when an unjust border divided neighbors. The Planina Karst Field, with a different appearance in each season, has provided yet another local characteristic - regular floods have washed away the border line multiple times a year, and border guards often performed their duties using boats.
The trail is marked and runs over existing macadam path. It comprises eight individual points where remnants of the Rapallo border and the construction of the Italian fortification system, the Alpine Wall, are presented. The starting point is the parking lot at the ruins of Haasberg Castle.
