DORMOUSE MUSEUM
The Lož Valley (Loška dolina) and its surroundings are undoubtedly one of the areas in the Karst and forested southern Slovenia where dormouse hunting has always been prevalent and was once economically significant. Today, it still exists as a tourist attraction and a part of the local hunting tradition. Dormouse hunting is an integral part of the identity and culture of these regions, no less important than the hay-drying racks described by the Slovenian poet Oton Župančič, the splendid natural and cultural heritage, and the coexistence of people with wildlife.
The Hunting Collection and Dormouse Museum have been on display at the Snežnik Castle since 1980. The collection contains trophies of indigenous species of wild animals from the Snežnik mountain range and Cerknica Lake. In the Dormouse Museum, you can learn about the characteristics and life of dormouse. The traditional method of hunting, which has been mentioned in this area since the 13th century and is still relevant today, is also presented, along with the use of dormouse for economic and food purposes in the past and today.
