The Conservation-Restoration Department was established in 1998 when the museum hired conservator-restorer Peter Križman and set up the facilities for the conservation-restoration workshop. The department primarily focuses on the conservation of archaeological material, which is the most extensive in the museum due to the number of objects. Archaeological items are highly sensitive due to their specifics and, therefore, require immediate attention. In addition to conserving and restoring archaeological material, the department also carries out conservation procedures on wooden and metal items from the ethnological and historical department. All data and interventions on objects are documented in a computer documentation program.
The conservator-restorer is also responsible for preventive conservation of all museum collections. This involves primarily measuring and controlling relative air humidity and temperature, both in exhibition and storage areas. The Conservation-Restoration Department collaborates in setting up permanent and temporary exhibitions in the museum.
