Dr. Lojz Kraigher Memorial Room
Dr. Lojz Kraigher (1877-1959), born in a house on Tržaška Street in Postojna, is remembered in Slovenian literary history as the author of naturalistic prose and drama, as well as a companion, supporter, and chronicler of our greatest writer, Ivan Cankar. Kraigher maintained contact with Cankar both in Vienna, where they both studied, and after their return to Slovenia. He provided significant moral and financial support, especially in Cankar's later years.
Dr. Lojz Kraigher, a physician and dentist who briefly led the Provincial Hospital in Ljubljana, is considered one of the founders of the Faculty of Medicine in Ljubljana. In 1919, he publicly advocated for its establishment, and the initiative was fully realized in August 1945. Lojz Kraigher was honored with its first honorary doctorate and became the faculty's librarian and the first editor of the revised Journal of Medicine. Throughout his public activities, Kraigher was a conscious Slovene patriot, which brought him a host of difficulties. He faced challenges both during the period when he lived and worked in the Primorska region during the fascist period, as well as during his time in Ljubljana when he was interned in Dachau due to his involvement in the national liberation movement. His initiative to establish the Faculty of Medicine in Ljubljana should also be understood in the context of his aspirations for national autonomy.
The Dr. Lojz Kraigher Memorial Room is located on the first floor of the Cultural Center in Postojna (Gregorčičev drevored 3a, Postojna).
Please note that the access to the Lojz Kraigher Memorial Room is possible only with guided tour, by prior arrangement.
